Defective Stucco
Improperly installed stucco is one of the most common construction defects found on homes in Florida. This is particularly true in planned subdivisions that are commonly developed by a single builder engaging in the practice of building too many homes at the same time, and too quickly.
A defective stucco finish adversely affects the appearance and functionality of a home or business.
The stucco finish acts as part of the exterior barrier that prevents water from penetrating a structure. Unfortunately, when stucco is installed improperly, small cracks can develop and water can get trapped beneath the surface, which may result in rotting wood framing, electrical problems, window damage, water soaked insulation, mold growth, and interior damage. In many cases, the signs of defective stucco installation are obvious, such as stucco cracking, buckling or delaminating, and stucco discoloration. However, in many cases, the signs of defective stucco installation are not obvious without an evaluation by a qualified structural engineer or general contractor.
There are specific building codes and standards that apply to the installation of stucco to the exterior of a structure. This process involves a number of critical steps, which must be followed to ensure that the stucco finish is installed properly so that it can perform as intended. Builders often fail to comply with these standards in the interest of time and expense, leaving property owners to deal with significant damage and repair costs.
Fortunately for property owners, there are laws in Florida that provide recourse to those damaged by a builder’s failure to comply with these building codes and proscribed standards.
Nutter Law Group attorneys work closely with qualified engineering experts and contractors to evaluate whether the stucco finish of your home or commercial structure was installed properly and in compliance with the applicable building codes and standards of care.
